What to Wear for Your Fall Family Photo Session

Fall in Atlanta is pure magic—golden light, crunchy leaves, and finally sweater weather. It’s also the busiest (and most requested!) time of year for family photos.

And the number one question I get, every single time?

“What should we wear for our fall family photo session?”

Friend, I got you. You don’t need to stress or go on a last-minute shopping spree. You just need a little guidance—and maybe a cozy scarf or two.

As your go-to Atlanta family photographer, here’s my favorite style advice to help your crew look amazing and feel like yourselves during your fall family session.

Choose a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits

Let’s retire the “everyone in jeans and white shirts” trend, shall we? The goal is to coordinate, not clone.

Pick 2–3 main colors and 1–2 accent colors that complement each other—think warm neutrals, deep greens, rich rusts, mustard, cream, and soft browns. Then, mix and match within that palette. This gives everyone freedom to feel like themselves, while still looking beautifully pulled together.

Pro tip: Avoid neon, tiny logos, or anything with words. Trust me, they don’t photograph well.

Texture Is Your Best Friend

Fall is the perfect time to play with layers and fabrics. Think: knit sweaters, denim jackets, corduroy, linen, cotton, and flowy dresses. Different textures add visual interest, especially in close-up shots.

Bonus: layers give kids something to do with their hands (read: fewer awkward arm flails).

Keep It Comfortable

This goes for kids and adults. If your outfit feels itchy, tight, or too fancy, it’ll show in the photos. You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort—you just need to find the sweet spot where you feel relaxed, confident, and totally you.

Shoes matter too! Skip the bright white sneakers and go for something simple, seasonal, and easy to walk in—because yes, we’re probably going to twirl, skip, or play tag at some point. 😉

Start with Mom’s Outfit First

If you’re the one booking the session, start with yourself. Find something you love and feel beautiful in—then build everyone else’s outfits around that.

Need inspiration? I’ve got a Fall Outfit Inspiration Board I send all my families after booking (just ask!).

Don’t Overthink It

At the end of the day, your fall family photo session is about connection, not clothes. The laughter, the snuggles, the “just one more leaf toss” moments—that’s what we’re here to capture.

The right outfit helps you feel confident and relaxed. But you showing up, loving on your people? That’s what makes the photo magic.
