How to Prepare for Your In-Home Newborn Photo Session

You’ve just had a baby (congrats, by the way!!), and you’re running on love, adrenaline, and exactly 2.5 hours of sleep. Someone suggests newborn photos and your brain immediately goes:

“Wait… am I supposed to clean the house? What if the baby cries? What do we even wear!?”

Deep breath, friend. You’re in good hands.

As an Atlanta photographer who’s spent years capturing squishy, sleepy, (and yes, sometimes screaming) newborns, I’ve got you covered with everything you need to know to prep for your in-home newborn photo sessionwithout adding more stress to your plate.

Let’s get you confident, calm, and cuddled up with baby.

Feed Baby Just Before I Arrive

A full belly = a happy, sleepy baby. Try to give baby a full feeding right before your session starts. Don’t worry if they need to snack again during our time together—that’s totally normal and expected. I build in extra time for feeds, snuggles, and diaper changes.

This isn’t a rushed shoot—it’s a baby-led, slow-paced session. No pressure.

Keep the Room Warm and Cozy

Babies love warmth. Set the thermostat a bit higher than usual—around 75°F is great. I may also bring a portable heater to keep things toasty during any swaddled or undressed photos.

If your baby’s cozy, sleepy magic is much more likely to happen. And bonus: you’ll probably be extra comfy too.

Don’t Stress About the House

Seriously. You do not need to deep clean.

All I need is a couple well-lit spots—like a window-lit bedroom, nursery, or living room—and we’re golden. I’ll gently move a few things around if needed (with your okay!) and create beautiful, intentional frames.

Remember: we’re capturing your real life. Not a Pinterest-perfect version of it.

Dress in Simple, Neutral Colors

Soft, neutral tones work best—think creams, grays, taupe, dusty pinks, or warm whites. Avoid bold prints or neon colors, which can distract from baby’s sweet features. Comfort matters, too—go for something that feels like you.

Pro tip: Don’t forget about cozy textures like knits or linen. They photograph beautifully and add depth to your photos.

It’s Okay If Baby Cries

This might be the most important tip of all: your baby is allowed to be a baby.

They might fuss. Maybe need to nurse twice. Possibly even poop on your shirt (it’s a rite of passage, honestly). I’m not just your photographer—I’m also a baby-soother, swaddle-fixer, and gentle guide through the whole thing.

Nothing your baby does will surprise or stress me. Promise.

Have a Few Essentials Nearby

Here’s what I recommend having close by:

  • Extra swaddles or blankets
  • A pacifier (if you’re using one)
  • Diapers + wipes
  • Any heirloom items or special objects you’d like included

But again—if you forget something? No big deal. We’ll roll with it.

You Focus on Snuggling. I’ll Handle the Rest.

Your in-home newborn photo session is meant to feel like a deep exhale—not another to-do list. You’ve done the hard part (hello, giving birth!)—now it’s time to slow down, connect, and soak up this beautiful, fleeting season.

I’ll be there with my camera, soft prompts, and calming energy to capture it all.
